How Can I Tell if My Transmission Is Bad?

Knowing the signs of a transmission that is going bad is important because the sooner you bring your vehicle into Dave’s Auto Repair, the less damage you cause to your transmission. Let’s talk about the signs of transmission problems below.

Burning Odors

An overheating transmission will smell hot. Because the transmission is located underneath your vehicle near the center, you may smell the hot odors coming from this area rather than your engine. A common cause of an overheating transmission is low transmission oil.

Check Engine Warning

Your transmission does not have a dashboard warning light of its own, so the engine control module will turn on the check engine light if the transmission system sends it an error code. Heed this warning and have a diagnostic check done on your vehicle as soon as possible.

Fluid Leaks

Because of where the transmission is located, you will also notice fluid leaks under the center of your automobile if the transmission is leaking. Transmission fluid is red, although it can be dark brown when it is old, and it protects the transmission just like the motor oil protects the engine.

Gear Slippage

If your transmission is slipping out of gear, you definitely have a transmission problem. When the transmission slips out of gear, your vehicle suddenly loses power, and your engine revs at much higher RPMs because it has been thrown into neutral.

Grinding Gears

The shifting of gears through the gear cycle should be smooth and relatively quiet. If your transmission is grinding or squealing at each gearshift, you might have low transmission fluid or another transmission problem. You may also feel your vehicle vibrate or shake when it shifts gears.

Neutral Humming

Humming sounds when your vehicle is in neutral is a definite sign that the transmission has problems. Again, you want to have any possible transmission problems checked into right away because if you continue to drive your automobile, you will damage the transmission further.

No Gear Shifting

A sign of a serious transmission problem is your vehicle refusing to shift through the gear shifting cycle. It doesn’t matter if you drive an automatic transmission or are trying to shift the gears yourself. A dying transmission will not shift from first to second and so on.

Unresponsive Transmission

Finally, a dying transmission will not go into gear in the first place. If you have problems getting your transmission to go into drive or reverse, it’s important to schedule a transmission inspection right away. An unresponsive transmission is a bad transmission.
